Craig Paul Scallan was called home on December 11, 2019 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, NC. He was born February 14, 1953 in Shreveport, Louisiana. Craig was a man of compassion, patience, kindness, integrity, jocularity, faith, and friendship.
Craig was a generous man who loved helping and teaching people. He embodied the characteristics of a servant leader who always greeted each person with a smile and regard for how they were doing. He joined Boy Scouting in 1961 and obtained the rank of Eagle Scout in Shreveport, Louisiana with Troop 20 of the Norwela Council. For the next 45 years, he gave countless hours back to Scouting while serving with his two sons and beyond. He served in a variety of positions in both Cub Scouts (Pack 17) and Boys Scouts (Troop 17) in Jamestown, North Carolina. Scouting positions included Pack Leader, Scoutmaster, District Commissioner, and Eagle Board of Review member to name a few. Some of his highlights of his scouting career included being the first LA Boy Scout to earn the atomic energy badge, official photographer for 1999 World Scout Jamboree, and leading contingents to several national scout jamborees. His main objective never wavered and that was serving and developing youth leaders of tomorrow.
Craig had a love for the earth and the desire to learn about everything in it. Many people knew him as a walking, talking encyclopedia. He knew a little bit about a lot of things. He loved to spend time in the great outdoors hunting, fishing, camping, hiking and shooting. But his greatest joy was sharing and experiencing his passions beside family and friends. Craig could be found enjoying one of his many passions that included cooking his famous chicken and sausage gumbo, reading a John Clancy novel, traveling via cruise ship with Mary, and above all else spending time with his family. Craig thoroughly enjoyed and loved spending time with family—a stand up father, loving popee, and wonderful husband.
Mary will remember Craig as a loving, caring husband and a sweet man. They enjoyed traveling through life together, often hand-in-hand, with their main focus centered on raising their four children. Craig set a positive example of what a good, kind, loving husband and father are to his children.
He was a proud member of National Eagle Scout Association, Kiwanis Club, Boy Scouts of America, North Carolina Fish and Wildlife Conservation, and National Rifle Association.
Craig will be greatly missed and survived by his wife of 41 years Mary Smith Scallan of Stokesdale, NC; his daughter Amber Scallan Hoover (Charleston, SC), her husband Chris Hoover and two sons Brody and Parker; his daughter April Scallan Stewart (Stokesdale, NC), her husband Brian Stewart and grandson Braeden and granddaughter Leena; son Ross Scallan (Fairbanks, AK), his wife Carrie Scallan and two grandsons Winston and Grady; granddaughter MacKenzie Swartz-Scallan and her mom Lauren Swartz Peabody (Greensboro, NC); his grandson Hunter Scallan (High Point, NC); and his brothers Jeffrey Scallan and wife Carlene, and Mark Scallan and wife Theresa. His son, Bryce Patrick Scallan, and his parents Claude Joseph (Buddy) and Ruth (Caraway) Scallan, precedes him in death.
Services will begin at 5:00 pm on Friday, December 20, 2019, with visitation starting at 4:00 pm, at the Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home, 6000 W. Gate City Blvd., Greensboro, NC 27407.
