In 1954, she married James Simpson Schenck, III, now a retired textile executive, and her childhood sweetheart, who she met for the first time in Fisher Park when they were childhood neighbors and friends. After sixty-one years, clearly it was love at first sight.
Her children, daughters and son in law, and grandchildren remember Anita as a beautiful, gracious, generous, patient, intelligent and witty mother, mother -in law- and grandmother, who unselfishly encouraged them all to pursue their goals and dreams.
As a founding member of St. Francis Episcopal Church, she was a Sunday school teacher and Chair of the Annual Book Sale, Chair of the Episcopal Diocesan Convention, and wrote a church history.
It is an understatement to say Anita was passionate about giving back to her community. She served as Greensboro Junior League President, was instrumental in the founding of the Greensboro Day School and Chair of the Greensboro Day School Green and Gold Day. She also served as Chair of Preservation Greensboro Incorporated, including overseeing the fundraising for the preservation of Blandwood Mansion and construction and management of The Carriage House. She was also President of the Blandwood Guild and the PGI Board.
Anita was Director and Coordinator of the Guilford County American Revolution Bicentennial Commission from 1974 to 1977. She was Chair of the 1989 Guilford County Roanoke Voyages Program, and served four terms on the Guilford County Historic Properties Commission.
She also was Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Greensboro Historical Museum and served two terms as Membership Chair and President of the Belle Meade Society. In 2005 she and her husband Jim co-chaired the Capital Fund for the Greensboro Historical Museum’s Voices of the City Exhibit and museum renovation.
An avid reader Anita spent years as the Chair of the Friends of the Library for the Greensboro Public Library and on the Member Selection Committee for the new library on Church Street. She was also a member of the DAR Guilford Battle Chapter.
A memorial service is scheduled at St. Francis Episcopal Church for 11:00 am, Monday, June 22, 2015 with a reception to follow at the Parish Hall. Reverend Milton Williams will officiate the service. Any charitable donations to any of the above organization are graciously welcome.
