Anne Zeigler Manning, 100, passed away January 16, 2025. She was born Anne Louise Zeigler in Bamberg, SC, on August 21, 1924, and her family moved to Gainesville, FL when she was nine months old. They lived on the campus of The University of Florida, where she met her future husband, John T. Manning. She graduated from PK Yonge Laboratory High School and attended Florida State, where she was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. She and John married in 1943, just before he was sent overseas to serve in the U.S. Army. When he returned after his service, they started a family, making many states their home before settling in Greensboro, N.C.
Anne was a member of Jamestown United Methodist Church and the Sedgefield Woman’s Club, for which she was given a lifetime achievement award. She also worked in her husband’s law office, was a caregiver to her mother, and enjoyed her four children and grandchildren. She always had a big garden and spent the summers canning vegetables and making preserves. (She was the quintessential Southern cook: She loved to make something extraordinary from “nothing special.”). She also loved to sew and made many of her children’s clothes. She was always up for adventures with her family, and she loved to fish at the beach, set up camp in the mountains and go boating, always finding the occasion to prepare delicious meals for everyone.
Anne loved animals and nature, and she instilled in all her children a deep respect for living creatures and their natural areas. She welcomed many domestic pets, as well.
After 56 years of marriage, John passed, and Anne decided to move to River Landing at Sandy Ridge, where she made new and lasting friendships, as well as cherishing the company of her dear friends from Greensboro. She was known to some as the “bread lady” for her spectacular sourdough bread.
Anne was also known for her wit, friendly calm manner, and delightfully dry sense of humor, and she will be remembered by many for her thoughtfulness and service to others. She had a way of making those fortunate enough to know her feel valued, and she lived her faith by her steadfast love, prayers and empathy. She cherished her roles as wife, mother, sister, daughter, grandmother, friend and caregiver. She will be missed and loved forever.
Anne is survived by her children John Manning (Alessandra), Elizabeth Liles, and Rebecca Long (Ric); grandchildren Carrie Anne Orlikowski (Victor), Cristina Manning, Camilla Manning; nieces Sally Manning and Jennifer Hackney, and nephews Justin Hackney and Jacob McKinney (Violet). In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son, Bob Manning, parents, Louise and Henry Zeigler, her brothers Tillman and Henry Zeigler, and her niece Judith Zeigler.
A memorial service will be held at River Landing at Sandy Ridge on March 29, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., and a family graveside service will be held in Richmond, VA later that week.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Jamestown United Methodist Church, The American Lung Association, SPCA of the Triad, or the charity of one’s choice.
