Arlene Elsie Breckler, age 75, passed away in Greensboro, North Carolina, on June 13, 2018. She was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 21, 1942, to Pearl and Albert Breckler. She graduated from Steinmetz High School in Chicago and studied at Broward College, Triton College and Guilford Technical Community College. Arlene retired from American Express after 30 years and loved to travel, visiting places like Australia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Italy, Portugal and Scandinavia. She was a tour guide’s dream as she wanted to see, experience and learn as much as she could about every destination.
Arlene was an avid Chicago Cubs fan, a passionate volunteer at Triad Stage and faithful supporter of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life where she celebrated being a cancer survivor. She also worked for the Guilford County Board of Elections. Arlene was a natural leader with the ability to take charge and leave things better than she found them. Her quick wit and positive spirit will be missed.
Arlene was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her loving extended family, goddaughter Karen Nielsen (Soren) and their children Jakob and Isabella, who adored their doting Nana; Kevin Britton (Jodi), children Claire and Julia; and Dorothy and Jerry Britton. She also had a wonderful circle of friends, including Lindy and Bruce Williams, Mary Ellen St. Clair, Sue and Dom Scalcione, and Heli Benson, who were by her side until her last breath.
No services are planned. In her memory, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, Triad Stage, Catholic Charities or Beacon Place hospice. Arlene’s song has ended, but the melody lingers on.
Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel is assisting the family.
