

Arthur Daniel Shackelford Sr., 89, passed away at his home surrounded by his family, September 29, 2017. A memorial service will be at 2 PM, October 7 at First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends following the service.
Arthur was born in Kinston, NC to the late Oscar Leon and Muzette Daniel Shackelford. After graduating high school he attended Virginia Military Institute and Yale University. He returned home to apprentice in his father’s construction business. This experience led to a career in commercial construction. He served in the Navy in WW II and the Army as a camouflage instructor during the Korean Conflict. On September 15, 1951, he married Rachel Hartgrove of King, NC. In 1960, he went to work for HL Coble Construction and moved the family to Greensboro. Later, he worked for Romeo Guest Construction before retiring in the early 1990’s. Arthur was a 32nd degree Mason. He joined First Baptist Church in 1960 and sang in the church choir for 56 years. He was happiest when spending time with family and friends. He also loved fishing, hunting, playing golf and relaxing at the beach.
Arthur is survived by his wife, Rachel H. Shackelford of the home; children and their spouses, Lisa and Frank Burney of Raleigh, Manina and Martin Reeves of Knoxville, TN, Arthur D. Shackelford, Jr. of Durham and John and Suzi Shackelford of Greensboro; grandchildren and their spouses, Megan and Dr. Chris Harris, Jillian and Matthew Angel, Lauren and Robert Shelton, Chris and Brandi Burney, Ian Burney, Michael Reeves, Grady Reeves, Thomas Shackelford and Alison Shackelford; great grandchildren, William and Avery Harris, Madeline and Nathan Angel, Liam and Hayes Shelton; brother, Dr. Robert H. Shackelford and his wife Evelyn of Mount Olive, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews. Arthur is preceded in death by daughter, Caryn Henretta, his sister, Mary Alice Smith and his parents.
