Barbara Ann Gesse

November 12, 1944December 28, 2019

Barbara Ann Brown Gesse passed away suddenly on Saturday, December 28th 2019 at Moses Cone Hospital. The funeral service to celebrate her life will be held at 11 am on Saturday, January 4th at First Lutheran Church, 3600 W Friendly Ave, Greensboro, NC. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Barbara was born on November 12th 1944 in Cincinnati, OH and was preceded in death by her parents Norman Albert Brown and Marion Graf Brown, and her brother Norman Alan Brown. She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years Floyd Dennis Gesse, sons Kevin Dennis Gesse (Kathryn), Darin Michael Gesse (Sharon), and her grandchildren Elizabeth Brockenbrough Gesse, Sara Kathryn Gesse, Megan Genevieve Gesse and Madeline Helene Gesse.

Barbara graduated at the top of her class from Mariemont High School in Cincinnati, OH and graduated from the honors program at Purdue University in Lafayette, IN. While at Purdue she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority.

Barbara especially loved spending time with her four granddaughters that she treated as “precious jewels” in her life, providing her with much joy and happiness. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed sharing her love for reading with others as a teacher and retail sales clerk for various bookstores. Barbara was also an avid golfer and tennis player. Her favorite place was on Sunset Beach, NC, where she enjoyed reading while sitting in the quiet surf and watching sea turtles hatch and make their way out to sea.

We would also like to thank the Greensboro 911 Service and Fire Department, Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital ER and CVICU, esp. Dr. Harding, Dr. Eltaraboulsi, Dr. Tegeler, and staff.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Barbara’s memory to First Lutheran Church, 3600 W Friendly Ave, Greensboro, NC 27410, or Greensboro Public Library, 219 N. Church St, Greensboro, NC 27402.

We met Barbara and, Dennie at Flamingo Beach Resort, St. Maarten
several years ago. They immediately became part of our beloved "Timeshare
Family". Although we only got together a few times, Stateside, we are forever bonded by those fun times. We have maintained a long distance friendship since that first meeting, sharing family events, travels, friends, memories and general life moments. That friendship will always be cherished.
We send our love and thoughts to Dennie and Family.

Just learned today of Barb's passing and wanted to say how sorry I am for your loss. I had the pleasure of meeting your wife, mother, & grandmother at Gold's gym several years ago when I started doing the water aerobics classes. Barb was my inspiration, always ready with a smile or a funny comment, or a story about camping/RVing. Our class will never quite be the same, as she stole a piece of our heart. Praying for you all.

Barbara was a woman of compassion and service as well as an enthusiastic lover of sport. In my memory she is usually wearing a tennis skirt and had either just finished a game or was going there next. It's what she did between the games I want to share today.

When Barbara heard about the illness and death of a friend's young daughter she joined other neighbors and donated her time to help school children know more about how to help themselves when death or illness occurred. Kids Path of Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro had a puppet show called "Aarvy Aardvark finds Hope" that was presented to every third grader in Guilford County. It's still offered because volunteers like Barbara make it possible. She gave her time and her talents to that program for years and for that I'll be forever grateful.

Thank you, Barb. You'll be so missed! Love, Ann

Barb was one of my beloved water students at Golds Gym; I always looked forward to her beautiful smile in class. We enjoyed sharing stories about the beach, books we had both read, our families. I, as well as our other members, will miss her dearly. My sympathy and prayers as we grieve her passing.

There are certain people who touch the lives of those they know in a unique way. Just knowing them brings us joy and inspiration, and when they're gone, memories of all they've done stay with us. Barbara was one of those people to me. I'm grateful to have known such a special person. I shall miss her each time I enter the pool for Waterworks Class.

With sympathy and understanding,
