Through the years, Bobbie was very active in the Catholic church and the community. She had a deep love for the Lord which led her to attend and graduate from The School of Spiritual Direction, run by the Benedictine monks in Pecos, New Mexico. She was well read and very active in the Charismatic Renewal within the Catholic Church. As a spiritual director in the Charlotte Diocese for many years, Bobbie was well regarded by the people she directed and brought a level of insight that few could match. She led many retreats which were always well attended. Prayer was a main focus of hers and for years would devote whole days praying for her nine children to come into a relationship with the Lord. After 30 years those prayers were answered. Bobbie was instrumental in the opening of Hospice of Catawba Valley whose name has recently changed to Carolina Caring. She was also a lifelong member of the Confraternity of Christian Women. She enjoyed playing tennis and won several awards doing so. She will be remembered for her independent spirit but most of all for her love of her husband and family.
Bobbie was born June 3, 1929 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the daughter of William Frederick Karriger and Rose Lee Davis Karriger. In addition to her parents, Bobbie was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Rev. Hugo L. May; daughter Mary Barbara May, sister, Evelyn Foreman, and her brother, Fred Karriger.
Those left to cherish her memory include her surviving 8 children, Ria Fialka of Greensboro, Tim May and wife Karla of Wake Forest, Mike May and wife Kathleen of Easley, South Carolina, Fred May and wife Sharon of Greensboro, Damian May of Toronto, Canada, Sara Averette and husband Dell of Holly Springs, Mimi Russell and husband Russ of Dodge City, Kansas, and Brian May and wife Anna of Greensboro; 25 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and a host of extended family.
The family asks with gratitude that in lieu of flowers, memorials in Bobbie’s name be made to Pennybyrn at Maryfield, Development Office, Attn: Edward Cordick, 109 Penny Rd., High Point, North Carolina. 27260.
