Tinker was born January 25, 1930 in High Point to the late Barney B. Cates, Sr. and Edell Hunt Cates. He was a 1948 graduate of Greensboro High School, a US Army Veteran and retired Postal Letter Carrier. On September 1, 1951, he married his high school Sweetheart, Jeanette Melvin Cates, who survives him.
Tinker was a man of great Faith and was a member of Hunter Hills Evangelical Church. He loved his family and enjoyed every one he met during his life, recalling stories with fond memories.
Tinker is survived by his loving wife, Jeanette; children; Susan (Steve) Wolfe, Mary Jayne (Roger) Seigler, Robert “Bobby” Cates and Carol (Mike) Rogers; grandchildren, Douglas and Chris Wolfe and Michael and Brittany Rogers; niece, Jan Wagoner; siblings, Rick (Wanda) Cates, Linda Suits and Mary Ellen Evangelista. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert N. Cates and William Cates.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel and the funeral service will be on Wednesday, February 27, 2:00 p.m. at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.
