Bernard Stanley “Stan” Meyer, 80, born on July 29, 1944 in Enfield, NC to Edward Meyer and Fanny Hobowsky Meyer, passed away peacefully and comfortably, surrounded by his family, at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC on Sunday June 8, 2025.
The middle of three siblings, he was preceded in death by his brother, Simon Meyer. Survivors include Stan’s wife of 55 years, Anita Rae Goldstein Meyer, 77, of Asheville, NC; sister Anne Lea Kramer, 77, of Enfield, NC, children Jonah, Nate, Jaymie, and Meagan, the absolute love of his life, grandson Jeremiah Edward Meyer (21), nephews Robb Levin (Marina) and David Levin (Ellen), and nieces Gabriella, Shaina, and Josefina. Jeremiah, a straight-A student and incredibly gifted artist, is a rising senior at the University of North Carolina at Asheville.
Edward Meyer, Stan’s father, was the youngest of 13 siblings, and as such—though Enfield is a quite small, rural town in eastern North Carolina—Stan grew up surrounded by the love of dozens of relatives. The then-mainstay Meyer’s Department Store, owned and run by Edward and Fanny Meyer, served the needs—socially and retail-wise—of generations of families in small-town Enfield over the span of many decades.
Young Stanley, always with candy filling his pockets, and known for carrying around knack-sacks of candy, seemingly always had playful mischief on his mind. He would often scare his mother by hanging out atop the roof on the family home, waiting until her return to jump off and frighten her (lovingly). Stanley would often bring along his Boy Scouts “hatchet” to dental appointments, just in case extra protection was needed (on his part). Especially when it came to braces.
Stan met his wife-to-be while both were students at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill), where he earned his degree in psychology and she, in journalism. After a mutual friend introduced the two, they fatefully ran into each other again at Kenan Stadium during a Carolina football game and the rest, as they say, is history.
Stan and Anita chose Greensboro, NC as their home thereafter to raise a family, where they have established deep roots over the past 50-plus years, due in large part to the Jewish community here in town. Members of Beth David Synagogue (where son Jonah, 51, received his Bar Mitzvah), the family later became members of Greensboro’s Temple Emanuel (where son Nate, 49, was Bar Mitzvahed).
It was Temple Emanuel in Greensboro which further emboldened Stan’s heritage, where he served as president of Brotherhood. Years later, grandson Jeremiah received his Hebrew name (Daniel Zamir, ben-Eliazer) in ceremony at Temple Emanuel.
Anita and Stan owned and operated together their public relations and advertising business, Creative PR, in Greensboro, for 30 years. The couple loved traveling the world—including multiple trips to Israel (one of which included taking Jeremiah)—something which brought great joy and birthed wonderful memories for Stan and Anita.
Undoubtedly, Stan’s “superpower,” as it were, was his unique ability to tell (silly Granddad) jokes to seemingly any- and everyone within his radius, leaving an indelible and marked impression upon those who were fortunate to share in a part of his life—large or small, family, friend, and stranger, alike.
Additionally, Stan was quite active in—and passionate about—the brotherhood of Masonry, local Greensboro Lodge 76, and found much joy volunteering with the Greensboro Mayor’s Committee for Persons with Disabilities, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a barrier-free community for all.
We love you, Dad, are eternally grateful for your presence in our lives (and having given us life itself), incredibly aware of the special touch you made upon a range of many other peoples’ lives, and find great comfort knowing you have now found peace.
Funeral services for Stan Meyer will be held on Sunday, June 15, 2025 (rather fittingly, on Father’s Day) at 11:00 a.m. at Temple Emanuel (1129 Jefferson Rd., Greensboro) followed by burial (including Masonic rites) in the Greensboro Hebrew Cemetery (2911 W. Gate City Blvd., Greensboro). Rabbi Andy Koren (dear friend of Stan and Anita for more than 30 years), of Temple Emanuel, Greensboro, will officiate. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund (at Temple Emanuel in Greensboro).
