

Bernard L. Zales, 99, a former resident of Clapp’s Assisted Living Center died on Tuesday May 10, 2022 at Moses H. Cone Health Center. He was born on September 27, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Joseph J. and Eleanor Besnoska Zales.
Bernard grew up in Vermilion, Ohio and graduated from Vermilion High School in 1941. On November 10, 1942, he joined the Marines and served until he retired on July 31, 1968. During his career in the Marines, Bernard was stationed in various places which included Camp Lejeune, NC; Cherry Point, NC; Philadelphia, PA; Parris Island, SC; and Camp Pendleton in San Diego, CA. He also spent time in the South Pacific during WW II.
Upon his retirement, Bernard then settled with his family in Greensboro, NC where he worked as an MCJROTC Instructor at Grimsley High School. He also was the purchasing manager for Dixie Machine Co. and was a groundskeeper at Sedgefield Country Club.
Bernard was a member of the Super Senior Golf Group, the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) and the American Legion.
He was married for 65 years to Bernice K. Zales who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, William, Thomas and Richard.
Bernard is survived by four sons, Michael (Gayle) of Greensboro, Thomas (Angel) of N. Myrtle Beach, SC, David (Melissa) of High Point, John (Carol) of Greensboro; four grandsons, Joshua, Matthew, David, Jr., Patrick; two granddaughters, Sarabeth, Ashlyn; six great grandchildren, Tanner, Eva, Henry, Liam, Ruby, Maria; one sister, Barbara Joanne of West Palm Beach, FL and two brothers, Robert of Panama City, FL and James of TN.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday May 18, 2022 at the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel. Interment with Military Honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard will follow in Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. until service time.
