Betty Lee Norris

January 22, 1929July 8, 2018

Betty Lee Moore Norris went home to her Heavenly Father on Sunday, July 8, 2018. Born 89 years ago, Betty embraced and devoted the seasons of her life to every purpose under Heaven.

In the season of her childhood, Betty planted and reaped a joyful, deep, abiding love for her family, her friends and for her faith. She was born to the late Garvin Chastain Moore and Eliza McLaughlin Moore, January 22, 1929, in Leeds, AL, where she grew up on a farm with her sister and brothers, Jane Moore Royal (+2005), Mack Moore (+1957), James Dyer (JD) Moore (+2011), Thomas Moore (+2010), and Cliff Moore (+2011). She moved with her family to Etowah County when she was twelve. She attended Emma Sansom High School. Betty often shared memories of being a teen in East Gadsden and spending time with friends on Hoke Street.

In the season of her early adulthood, Betty worked several jobs including a movie theatre, restaurants, and banks. She worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company on and off for five years. During a layoff from Goodyear, a friend got Betty a job working with her in a bank in Washington, DC. It was here that she met her future husband, Leonard Norris (+1991). They married in 1957 and she moved to Maryland.

In the season of her 34 year marriage to Leonard, Betty was blessed with a daughter. Betty entertained at their home on the banks overlooking the Potomac River for 19 years before returning to Gadsden, AL. It was a time for Betty’s captivating Southern wit and charm to grace her friends, family, fellow church members, and everyone who knew her. Betty’s charisma endured in a way that would last throughout the remaining seasons of her life.

In 2014, Betty moved to Greensboro, NC, to live with her daughter. As the seasons turned, and as Betty reaped love and blessings from a joyful life, she continued to lift up the spirits of all she met and to build new friendships. Betty was aptly nicknamed “Sunshine” by members of her church. By her unwavering example, Betty taught the art of love and joy.

Now, in this season of passing, Betty is survived by her beloved daughter Regina Ellen Norris; nieces, Suzanne Norris, Mary Ann Schutz, Carol Connor, Betty Jane Wolfe, and Sandra Walker; and nephews, Bill Royal, John Norris, Bruce Moore, Gary Moore, Tim Moore; and a number of great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by lifelong friends Iris Wagnon, Betty Glen and Willene Jackson.

The family wishes to thank Home Instead Senior Care, Hospice of High Point, and Pleasant Grove Baptist Church of Greensboro, NC, for their care during her four years in Greensboro, NC.

Funeral arrangements have been made for three o'clock Thursday, July 12th at Crestwood Funeral Home. Roy Thomas is officiating. She will be laid to rest next to her husband at Crestwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Sweet Betty, felt I knew her all my life, wish I had! She was a Hoot! And she went out with a bang. During the funeral it thundered, stormed, the lights went out, right after, the sun came out. She would have loved It! She will be missed.
