

Betty Motley Payne, 81, a resident of Jamestown passed away peacefully with family by her side on Monday, April 4, 2022 at Hospice of the Piedmont. She was born October 19, 1940 in Franklin County, VA at home to the late Paul Ernest and Virgie Edwards Motley.
Betty was retired from Duke Energy. She took pride in her 33 years of service and loved her Duke Energy family. Betty was a breast cancer survivor. A strong woman of firm faith, Betty earnestly put others needs ahead of her own and was known to all as one on whom to solidly depend. Betty had a skillfully timed, quick wit and a love for shagging. She had a gift for all things artistic and creative . . . piano, gardening, decorating and even junking long before it was cool. Betty was a devoted friend to all, a mother like no other and most of all, she was Nana to her grandchildren, always there for every need, competition or celebration!
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Sonia LeJeune; a sister, Paulette Williams and brothers, Carlton Motley and Tony Motley.
Betty is survived by her husband of 58 years, Carl Payne of the home; three daughters, Pam Margolis and husband Owen of Boone, Lisa Culler of Greensboro, Carla Saxon and husband Rusty of Jamestown; son-in-law, Tom LeJeune; three sisters, Louise Washburn (Curtis), Joyce Yates (Roger), Donna Kivett; brother, Virgil Motley (Linda); sisters-in-law, Margaret Motley, Regina Motley; seven grandchildren, Jake Margolis (Whitney), Dan Margolis, Hannah Avery (Cole), Ben Margolis, Emily LeJeune, Madelene Saxon, Gabe Saxon; one great-grandson, Asher Margolis and numerous much loved nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel, conducted by the Pastor Jim Grasty. Interment will follow in Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 1:30 p.m. until service time.
