Betty was a lifelong resident of Greensboro. Her parents Harry and Esther Chandgie owned The National Shirt and Hat Shop located on South Elm Street (next to the Peanut Shop) for several decades. Betty graduated from Greensboro Senior High School in 1939 and then from National Park College in Maryland. While at National Park, she was thrilled to have tea at the White House with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. She was married in 1942 to Stanley M. Lerner. Their son, Richard, was born in 1945 several months before Stan's death. Betty married Charles Roth in 1950 and together they had two daughters, Barbara and Kathryn. Betty was an avid golfer and bridge player and played multiple weekly games with many special friends. She also played golf most Sundays with her husband Charles, making a hole in one on a memorable Mother’s Day many years ago. She enjoyed her membership in the Greensboro Country Club until very recently. She was also a lifelong member of Temple Emanuel in Greensboro.
She is survived by her daughters, Barbara Roth and Kathryn Roth, grandchildren Farrell Roth, Liam Roth (Annie Lapin), Blair Wisco (Martin Andersen), Maggie Napier (Justin), six great grandchildren (Rosalie and Cormac Roth, Rebecca and Sophia Andersen, Walker and Bennett Napier), daughter-in-law, Christine Roth and many other Chandgie, Kurtz and Roth descendants. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Roth and son, Richard Lerner Roth.
Special thanks go to all of her wonderful caregivers and to AuthoraCare for all the support she received. We are also very grateful for the kindness and medical support she received from her nephew and wife, Stewart and Betty Rogers.
Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Emanuel or AuthoraCare.
