

Caroline Elizabeth Keener North, age 65, passed away on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, in Durham, NC. Her Celebration of Life will take place at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3906 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27410, on Sunday, September 13 at 3:00 pm, with a reception to follow at her home, 5308 Century Oaks Drive, Greensboro, NC 27455. In honor of the joy in which she lived, the family asks that if you are able to attend, you wear bright, joyful colors in her memory.
Caroline’s parents were Hurshell Halton Keener and Geraldine Fuller Keener. Caroline was born in Hickory, NC on January 18, 1961. She attended Hickory High School and continued her education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro ("UNCG"), where she received a Bachelor's of Science in Social Work with a Minor in Sociology in 1983, and a Master's of Education with a concentration in Guidance and Counseling in 1986.
After graduation from UNCG, Caroline worked in the Guilford County Court system in the Alternative Sentencing Program, where she advocated for alternatives to incarceration. When she became a mother, Caroline lived a life of service as a volunteer for organizations important to her, such as: Food Bank of North Carolina, Greensboro Urban Ministry, Westminster Presbyterian Church, United Way, Women's Resource Center of Greensboro, Women to Women, First Presbyterian Church, Out of the Garden, and many others. Additionally, she fundraised for organizations close to her heart, such as: Planned Parenthood, HorsePower Therapeutic Riding Center, Greensboro Day School, and others. In 2015, Caroline established the ACH Keener Family Foundation under the auspices of Greensboro's Community Foundation to help serve the needs of the local community.
She is survived by her husband Brian John McMillan; her children Alexandra Keener North, Carter Davis North, and Harrison Fuller North and his wife Carmela Cardama Baez; Hugh Davis North, her former husband and father of her children; her brother Staley Keener and sister-in-law Kathy Keener; her nieces Sarah Keener Moretz, Katherine Keener Nye and her husband Brandon Nye, and Laura Keener Netherland and her husband John Netherland.
In lieu of flowers, her family suggest donations to HorsePower Therapeutic Riding Center in Greensboro.
The family would like to thank the many medical personnel who cared so well for Caroline over the previous six years, including Dr. Brad Sherrill and Dr. Katarzyna J. Jamieson.
