Charles Frederick Usborne IV, age 81, of Greensboro, North Carolina, passed away on January 26, 2026 with his loving family by his side. Charles, also known as Chuck, was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 21, 1944.
Chuck graduated from Glenbard East High School of Lombard, Illinois in 1962. Chuck attended Southern Illinois University and graduated in 1967. He was a proud member of the Theta Chi fraternity. He was known as the light of the room and often the life of the party. He had a rare gift for making people feel welcome. His friendships were deep, long-lasting, and meaningful—just like the life he lived.
During the Vietnam War, Chuck entered the army in February of 1968. He served at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. This experience shaped his perspective and deepened his appreciation for life.
Chuck built a successful career as a financial planner, spending over 30 years with The Guardian Life Insurance Company. He often said, “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” True to his words, he never stopped working—because he genuinely loved what he did. His dedication, integrity, and joy for his profession left a lasting impression on colleagues and clients alike.
Chuck lived life to the fullest. He was a devoted husband to Patricia for 43 years, a loving father, proud grandfather, and a man who truly embraced life, took great pride in always caring for his family and treasured family time. He was a wonderful husband and a great father who instilled in his family the importance of togetherness and making memories—lessons that will continue to echo through generations.
An avid skier, Chuck spent many happy years enjoying time at his cabin in Blue Knob, Pennsylvania. Chuck served for many years on the Blue Knob Ski Patrol.
He was an excellent golfer who delighted in playing beautiful courses and patiently taught his daughters, nephews and grandchildren the game he loved. He was a member of Hidden Creek Country Club in Reston, VA and Belmont Country Club in Ashburn, VA.
In his later years, after moving to Greensboro, he grew steadily in his faith and found a meaningful church home at Jamestown Presbyterian Church, where his spiritual life continued to flourish.
He is preceded by his loving parents, Charles and Helen Usborne. Chuck is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia Usborne; his daughters, Kelly Usborne Bruce of Fortuna, CA and Laura Usborne Shade (husband Edward Shade), of Oak Ridge, NC. He was a cherished grandfather to Winter, Warren, Sloan, Riley, Boston, and James. He is survived by his sister, MarSue Durrbeck, of Evanston, IL. His nephews Bob Durrbeck (wife Connie, daughter Cheyenne, from Tinley Park, IL) and Jeff Durrbeck (wife Julie, children Audrey, Olin & Brody from Broomfield, CO).
Above all, Charles Frederick Usborne IV was a wonderful man and an exceptional role model. His love, faith, laughter, and legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
