Born in Johnston County, North Carolina on February 11, 1953, he was the son of the late James Abram and Pauline Daughtry Smith. He was a proud graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, class of 1975.
Randy was the Director of Facility Transition Services, a division of Alfred Williams & Company based in Raleigh, North Carolina. He considered his 27 years of employment with AWC a great joy and a challenge for excellence. Under his leadership, FTS has grown into a vibrant, successful company whose initiatives have given his team the opportunity to complete projects in the United States and abroad.
He was an avid offshore fisherman, a faithful friend, and mentor to many.
He is survived by his wife Kathy Whitcomb Smith; stepdaughter Kate Thompson Lanier and husband Greg of Cambridge, England; stepson Walker Thompson and wife Lauren of Clemson, South Carolina; brother, Harold Smith and wife Beverly of Bahama, North Carolina. Randy is also survived by grandchildren Caroline and Amelia Lanier of Cambridge, England; and two more granddaughters on the way.
Randy was the special uncle to Ellen Smith Wilson and her husband Troy of Graham, North Carolina, and Nan Smith Toppin and her husband Gary of Carolina Beach, North Carolina. He was the very fun-loving and adventurous great-uncle to Cody and Chandler Wilson of Graham and Ava and Maris Toppin of Carolina Beach.
Randy will be laid to rest in the cemetery of his childhood church, Hephzibah Baptist Church in Princeton, North Carolina in a private family service on Tuesday, June 23.
A celebration of Randy’s life will be held at 2 pm on Monday, June 29, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3906 West Friendly Avenue in Greensboro, North Carolina. A reception will follow the service.
