Dalton Christopher Gray, 31, was born on July 4, 1994, and passed away on January 31, 2026. Over his last three years, Dalton fought his cancer battle with courage, resilience, and grace, continuing to share his light with those around him even through the most difficult moments.
Dalton was a Durham resident having grown up in Greensboro. He was a graduate of Appalachian State University, where he earned a degree in molecular biology. Following graduation, he began his career with bioMérieux as an account manager, a role he truly enjoyed. Beyond his professional life, Dalton loved adventure and had a thirst to learn. Dalton was an advanced open water diver whose greatest passion was exploring the world beneath the sea. Travel brought him immense joy - and he embraced new destinations, cultures, local cuisines, and breweries – often acting as the travel guide.
At home, Dalton was an accomplished foodie who loved everything from local hotspots to any good hole in the wall. He enjoyed cooking and creating memorable meals for family and friends. He had a deep love for music and concerts and taught himself to play both the drums and guitar. A lifelong biologist at heart, and by degree, he was often called upon by family to identify insects or answer scientific questions—and was almost always right in his responses (to the chagrin of many). Dalton also enjoyed watching sports with friends, especially football, and was a devoted New England Patriots fan. He was able to see them win the AFC during his final days, a moment that brought him happiness.
Dalton will be remembered as a kind, generous, and thoughtful soul whose presence enriched the lives of all who knew him.
He is survived by his parents, Steven and Dawn Gray; the love of his life, Maria Cassas; his sisters, Jennifer Keister and Melissa Johnson; and his brother-in-law, JD Keister. He was a devoted uncle—known affectionately as “Uncle D” or “Uncle Dolphin”—to his seven nieces and nephews: Grayson, Addy, Livy, Holden, Aiden, Liam, and Shylynn.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Atrium Cancer Center and Duke Hospital for the compassionate care they provided. Dalton’s life, love, and spirit will be cherished and remembered always.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to The North Carolina Zoo Society in Dalton’s honor. A memorial Bench will also be placed at the zoo so his memory can be enjoyed by others for years to come.
