Dear Ellen, Tim, and Dana: I am so sorry for your loss, for everyone's loss. Of course I knew Dan well from his role as GDS parent, but I was even more privileged to get to spend a week in the woods with him on the Junior Backpacking Trip in April of 1999--Tim will remember it was the trip that had snow at the end! It was my first, and I was reassured that I would have a doctor in my group, but over the course of the week I got to know Dan just as a person. He was so funny--wickedly sarcastic but in a loving, caring way, and so wise as well. I learned a lot from him about life, fatherhood, and common sense. We were always the first two up so we shared many instant oatmeal and coffee breakfasts together. Our community will miss him immensely, and again, I'm so sorry for your loss.

Dear Family,

I am shocked and saddened by the loss of Dr. Murphy. My prayers are with you.

Dr. Murphy and I had a 20-plus-year doctor/patient journey! He made me the bionic woman! Total joint replacements...both knees, both hips (including enclosed reductions and open revisions). Thank you, Tim, for helping him "fix" me. Between replacements he repaired numerous broken bones along with various procedures to do "patch work fixes". We agreed I was his "Anything but normal patient".

Dr. Murphy was truly a great doctor, but an even better kind and caring person. I am blessed to have known him!

I am sending my heartfelt sympathy to the Dan Murphy Family.
Thank you for sharing him with his patients!

Dr. Murphy was not only an excellent physician, he was a tremendous individual. I met him in high school and he did 2 surgeries over the years. He was the kind of person who would treat you like an individual and not just a number. He will be sorely missed. I'll never forget this talented man.

Ellen and family,
I am so very sorry to hear of Dan’s passing. So many fond memories of a man whom I got to know first through our Operation Smile trips and then on the sidelines at Friday night football games.
We always spoke, carving out a few minutes to catch up and share a laugh.
The thing I miss most after retiring from the News & Record is the people that shared a little of their lives with me and our readers.
Dan will continue to be a buddy who shared a special place in my heart.
