David “Wayne” Coffey Jr., 51, passed away on Wednesday at Rex Hospital after a courageous battle with colon cancer. He was born in Greensboro, NC on August 6, 1966, the son of David Wayne Coffey Sr. and Brenda Oakley Coffey. He grew up in the Brown Summit community and graduated from Northeast High School in 1984. As a teenager, he started working as a mechanic and had a passion for cars his whole life. He was proficient in the operation of heavy equipment. He could drive anything with wheels. He also worked with his father in telephone system installations and worked with computers. He attended ASU and NC State University. Wayne loved his position as Utilities Supervisor with the Water Distribution Division for the City of Raleigh.
Wayne had a passion for the outdoors and loved nature. He looked forward to deer hunting and being in his tree stand and becoming part of nature. He was a gun enthusiast and an advocate for gun safety. He would never hesitate to jump in his truck to help out a friend in need. Wayne was a captivating story teller and had many exciting adventures during his life. He would always start with “Let me put it to you this way”. He was deeply rooted in his faith and a loyal friend and always put his family first. He will be deeply missed by his family, many friends and all those that loved him.
Wayne was preceded in death by his loving grandparents, Joseph Harmon Oakley and Rhoda Elizabeth “Teet” Johnson Oakley, and Paul Persing Coffey and Helen Pitts Coffey and father, David Wayne Coffey Sr. in 2015. Surviving are his loving mother, Brenda Oakley Coffey; sisters, April Anne Coffey, Erin Coffey Chamblee and husband Kenneth; fiancée Mary P. Tamarazzo and son Benjamin; his loving nephews who he referred to as “rascals”, Alexander Coffey and Benjamin Chamblee and niece Lillian Chamblee and many cousins, aunts and uncles.
There will be a celebration of his life on Saturday, 5:00 pm at Hillcrest Baptist Church, located at 3800 Hillcrest Dr., Raleigh, NC. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, 3:30 pm at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 W. Gate City Blvd. in Greensboro, NC with burial to follow at Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2:30 pm until service time on Sunday at the funeral home.
