I was just looking through UNCG's website and discovered that Dr. Mitchell is no longer with us. What a great loss to many. When I took Stats 108, I barely passed with a D-, sad to say. But, then, when I was required to take Statistics in Sociology for my major, Dr. Mitchell put statistics in a context that I could understand and I managed to do very well in his class. It was primarily due to Dr. Mitchell's never-ending patience and willingness to work with us until we got it. My thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Mitchell's family. God bless.

I'm also a former student of Dr. Mitchell (one of the fortunate many, it seems!) and just came across the news of his passing on the UNCG Sociology Department's home page.  I'm still a bit in shock at the loss of such a vibrant personality who gave so much of himself to everyone around him.  Statistics was feared and dreaded by many Sociology majors, myself included, but he got us through it with extraordinary patience.  I'll always remember the way his eyes lit up when he saw that we understood something we had been struggling with.  Dr. Mitchell's passion for teaching and for life in general was evident, and I am grateful to have known him.  My thoughts are with his family; may they be comforted by their memories.

I was a student of Dr. Mitchell and I was just randomly looking up information for UNCG when I saw this - I am so saddened to hear he has passed.  He was a wonderful man and mentor - always there to talk and give encouragement.  My thoughts are with his family.

I was a former student of Dr. Mitchell and just heard the saddening news of his passing. Dr. Mitchell was truly an extraordinary person. He was brilliant and compassionate. He was such an amazing professor and students in his classes could tell how much he loved his career. He was truly a blessing and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He helped me tremendously through my undergraduate studies at UNCG. He will be missed and remembered by many. My prayers are with all the family and friends that knew him.

I just found out the news of Dr. Mitchell's passing. I'm a former student of his from UNCG. He was a brilliant, benevolent, patient and dedicated man! I always enjoyed seeing the smile that never left his face. I will miss his original sense of humor and witty remarks, but I will always be able to remember and hear his contagious, charming chuckle. I don't think anyone could avoid laughing along with him. His breadth of knowledge always impressed me. Best wishes to friends and family in finding solace in good memories of a unique, visionary with a caring spirit.

Dr. Mitchell helped guide me through a very difficult time in my undergraduate studies at UNC Greensboro. I recall his benevolence as if it were yesterday. He was great teacher, but more importantly, a man who truly cared about his students success.

David was one of the first people outside of my Department, Geography, that I made friends with when I arrived in 1995.  He helped me in many ways to become a much better faculty member. I'll always remember our conversations, his wit and his humor.  Most of all I'll remember and miss the way his eyes twinkled and sparkled when he laughed and he seemed to laugh a lot. Dr. Mitchell was truly a blessing to me. He was the most humble and patient professor I ever had; with a great sense of humor. He will forever be remembered and deeply missed. Dr. Mitchell was one of the most caring instructors I have encountered.  Even outside of the classroom, he was always happy to extend support and encouragement to his students.  He has enriched the lives of many and will be missed dearly.

Dr. Mitchell was an excellent professor and one of the nicest people I have ever met. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Dr Mitchell was one of my of my favorite sociology professors. He always took the time to answer my questions and always encouraged me. He touched so many lives and mine is one of those. He will be greatly missed but always remembered.

Dr. Mitchell will always be a professor I think about when remembering my undergrad years.  I was continuously amazed at his patience as he would, once again, explain a histogram.  I look back on his class and smile, not just because he was one of the few Statistics teachers I could understand, but because he was one of the most thoughtful professors I have ever had.

Without a doubt, Dr. Mitchell was one of my favourite colleagues during my stay as a guest professor at UNCG in 2006. I'll always remember his quiet friendly kind and that he truly cared about me. He was so helpful to get deeper knowledge in our shared and beloved urban sociology. And I’m very often had fun with him when was listening to the German broadcast station “Berliner Rundfunk”. I had such god talk with him about Germany and Berlin.

I shared the office next to David for the last seven years. We had many great conversations and good times. David was a dear friend, a generous colleague, and a genuine human being. My own life was enriched by knowing him.

I remember Dr. Mitchell as a kind and good man. My heart goes out to family and close friends.  Wishing you good memories and kind company in these difficult days.

I am so very sorry to hear of his passing.  He was my adviser when I first came to UNCG as an adult returning student back in the later 70"s.  I had him for many courses throughout my under graduate and graduate career and always enjoyed working with him.  He made getting an education enjoyable!

Truly one of the finest.  I will miss him.

Dr. Mitchell was a wonderfully kind man and an excellent professor.  He served on my thesis committee and I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have known and kept in touch with him through the years.  He will be sorely missed.  My deepest sympathy goes out to his family during this time.

I was a student of Dr.MItchell's sociology statistics class. I always struggled with statistics, but his dedication and willingness to explain everything, in detail, after class, allowed me the chance to make an A! Dave was always a great listener, even to the faculty kids at picnics.  My best memory of him will be the way his nose crinkled as he laughed, even when he laughed with skepticism (or a healthy dose of reality).

I had the wonderful privilege of having Dr. Mitchell as one of my grad school professors way back when. It was truly a pleasure to be in his class. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and family during this time of loss.

I was a student of Dr. Mitchell and from everyone at the university we will  miss him dearly. My condolences to his wife and family.

I had Dr. Mitchell for several classes throughout my time at UNCG. With each class I took, I saw it was more about the students - learning the material, understanding the material, making it fun, and getting to know us personally - than it was about simply teaching from a book. He was understanding, compassionate, and genuine, and will truly be missed. My prayers are with his family, and with all those whos lives he touched as deeply as he touched mine.

Dr. Mitchell provided consistent advising throughout my graduate education at UNCG, despite the fact that he was never one of my formal mentors or professors.  I knew that I could always rely on his honest opinion, and appreciated the candor with which he spoke.  I would like to send my deepest and most sincere condolences to his family and friends, while sharing the shock of this untimely tragedy.

To the family of David, my thoughts are with you.  He was an amazing man, I was honored to have known him. Every time I passed under the train tracks in Worcester I thought of him.
