Delores was born on July 14, 1932, in Greensboro, North Carolina, to the late Lacy and Arietta Stone Carroll. She entered the world prematurely and was so tiny that doctors were unsure whether she would survive. But from the very beginning, Delores was a fighter. She went on to live a long, beautiful life filled with faith, family, laughter, love, and countless memories.
Delores attended St. Paul Methodist Church for most of her life, and her faith remained an important part of who she was.
She worked for many years at Lowe’s Hardware on Battleground Avenue, where she eventually retired. Delores never met a stranger. She had a warm, welcoming personality and simply loved being around people. Whether she was visiting with family, talking with friends, or meeting someone new, she had a way of making people feel comfortable and cared for.
Delores loved to shop and enjoyed a good road trip. She was always happy to head for the mountains, the beach, or just about anywhere she could go with the people she loved. For her, the destination was only part of the fun—the best part was being together and making memories along the way.
Her greatest joy, however, was her family. She loved spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and treasured every moment she spent with them. Delores was incredibly generous and would have given anything she had to someone she loved. She gave freely, loved deeply, and never hesitated to help someone in need.
She also knew how to enjoy the simple pleasures of life—a glass of sweet tea, fried flounder, good barbecue, or a hot dog from the American Legion. These simple favorites, along with shopping trips, road trips, family gatherings, and everyday moments together, are now treasured memories for those who loved her.
Delores is survived by her three sisters, Annie Haynes, Loretta Calhoun, and Elizabeth Forrest; her children, Terri Hersh (Barry), Robyn Schroeder (Robert), and Gary Laughlin (Tammy); her grandchildren, Jaime Bunnell (Ed), Justin Laughlin (Melanie), April Fields (Joe), and Lamar Schroeder; and her great-grandchildren, Abram Bunnell, Rebekah Bunnell, Lucas Dunbar, and Noah Fields.
She was preceded in death by her beloved grandson, Joey Schroeder.
Delores leaves behind much more than memories. She leaves behind the love she poured into her family, the kindness she showed to others, and the example of a life that was never taken for granted. Even in her last moments with family she made sure they knew that she wanted more time with them, make it a good life, love God, and always remember that I love you.
After 94 years, Delores has finally made it home. We can picture her walking into the arms of Jesus, where there is no more pain, no more sorrow, and no more goodbyes. What a beautiful reunion it must have been as she saw the face of Jesus and was welcomed into Heaven.
Though our hearts are broken by her leaving, we find comfort in knowing that this goodbye is not forever. We hold onto the promise that, by God’s grace, we will see her again. Until that day, Delores will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
“Well done, my good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23
