

Dolores was educated in the Greensboro Public School System. She was a graduate of the James B. Dudley Senior High School, Class of 1952. She moved to Washington, DC and attended Howard University. After one year, she returned to North Carolina and attended what is now Fayetteville Technical Community College, graduating with a two-year degree in Business Administration.
Dolores worked for, and retired from, the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources in Winston-Salem, NC, in 2002. "Doady", as she was affectionately called by family and friends, was a life-long member of Bethel AME Church. She was a member of the Usher Board, the Missionary Society, Asher Tribe Leader, until her health failed. Doady was also a member of the Greensboro Interdenominational Usher's Union.
"Doady" was a Member of Daughters of I.B.P.O. Elks of the World, Old North State Temple #142, for numerous years. She served as Financial Secretary of Progressive Council #1, a member of the Past Daughter Rulers Progressive Council #1, and the Past Grand Daughter Ruler's Council. "Doady" was an avid reader ordering books, buying from used book stores, and even trading them with family members! She also loved playing Spades.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Theora G. Gilmer, sisters, Jacqueline "Jackie" Smith, Terry Speed, Rosalind G. Dixon, and brother, William "Bee Bee" Gilmer.
Survivors include one sister, Eileen G Blackwell, and one brother, Roderick E. "Ricky" Gilmer, both of Greensboro, NC, and a host of other relatives and friends.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 14th at 12pm, with a Celebration of Life Service following at 1pm. Services are being held at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, 200 Regan Street, Greensboro, NC 27410
