Donald R. Hughes, 88, a resident of Greensboro, passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at Moses Cone Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was born July 7, 1929, in Cambridge, MA, to James Francis Hughes and Margaret McCarthy Hughes.
Don was forever proud of the four years he spent in the United States Navy after high school. He was later a graduate of Harvard and Harvard Business School. In 1959, he came South and joined Burlington Industries in Greensboro. In 1994, he retired from the company as Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer. Donald was a past president of both the NC Governor’s Council of Business and Industry and the American Textile Manufacturers Institute. He was a founding member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and a member of the Greensboro Rotary Club.
Don is survived by his wife of 65 years, Agnes Burns Hughes of the home; daughters, Suzanne Hughes Sullivan of Atlanta, GA and Elizabeth Hughes of Charlotte; brothers, James F. Hughes, Jr. (Carolyn) of Oceanside, NY and Kevin Hughes (Diane) of Buffalo Grove, IL; sister, Eileen Labrecque (Robert) of Peabody, MA; granddaughter, Blaise Sullivan; grandsons, Luke, Jude and Caspar Sullivan.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Don will be held Tuesday, 11:00 a.m., June 26, 2018 at St. Pius X Catholic Church. The family will receive friends at a reception immediately following in the Simmons Center at the church. The family asks with gratitude that memorials in Donald’s name be made to the St. Pius X Catholic Church Building Fund, 2210 N. Elm St., Greensboro, NC 27408.
