

He was a member of the graduating class of 1956 from Jamestown High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, serving from June 1956 to June 1960. He retired in 2001 from Burlington Industries after over 40 years as a computer analyst. His favorite hobbies included growing roses and listening to all types of music. He was a member of the Greensboro Rose Society, and typically grew over 100+ rose bushes that he showed and shared with others. When he wasn’t in his gardens, he could be found relaxing in his music room. His love of music covered a wide range of genres from classical to blue grass, and most every type in between. He was an active member of Friendly Ave. Church of Christ where he served as deacon for the greeter’s ministry.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Dorothy Newman Marsh and his brothers, Ralph, Billy, Glen, and Kenneth Newman.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Jenkins Newman of Greensboro; his son, Donald Lee Newman, Jr. and wife Julie of Apex and two grandsons, Joshua Newman and Andrew Newman; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday May 16, 2026, at Guilford Memorial Park officiated by Dr. Jason Noble. Military Honors will be presented by the Randolph County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel on Saturday from 12:00 p.m. until service time.
