A funeral service will be held Thursday, March 10, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm Chapel. Burial will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park. Friends will be received from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m., prior to the service.
Dot was born on October 19, 1928 to Lessell Wilson and Lillie Winslow Bray in Sunbury, North Carolina.
After graduating from high school as class salutatorian, Dot attended Elon College (now Elon
University) and then transferred to the nursing school at Duke University. During her senior year in nursing school she was also the class treasurer. She graduated in 1950, passed the nursing board and became a registered nurse, beginning her career at Duke Hospital. Then, in 1954, Dot met her future husband, Colen, on a blind date set up by a friend of Colen’s. Three months later they married on June 13 at the First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, a union that lasted 58 years with the death of Colen in 2012. Dot and Colen were lifelong members of the church.
Upon moving to Greensboro, Dot began working at Moses Cone Hospital. Down time was spent playing bridge with friends and family. Dot also worked at Sears as a company nurse. Later, she was invited to work at the Moses Cone Family Practice Center where she remained until she retired from Cone Hospital in 1991. Towards the end of their working years, Dot and Colen found a passion learning ballroom dance and joined a local dance group, Club 75.
After retiring from Cone Hospital, Dot and Colen enjoyed traveling to other states and several countries, but loved their home the best.
In addition to her parents and husband, Dot was preceded in death by her brother, Gerald. She is survived by her daughter, Beth Mueller (Jeff) as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank those who showed their kindness and support, visiting, and spending time with her. The family appreciates the special gift of music from Mark Rosenbaum which we played round the clock the last few days. The music brought us much peace and comfort. In addition, we give a special thanks to everyone at Beacon Place that touched her life, making her final days more peaceful.
In lieu of flowers a donation of your choice would be appreciated especially considering Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro and the Salvation Army.
