Dorothy (Dot) Elizabeth Hamlin Simmons, 99, formerly of Greensboro, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2018 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington, North Carolina. Born October 11, 1918 in Blacksburg, Virginia, she was the daughter of James Thomas and Bertha Mae Hamlin and the wife of James Gaylord Simmons.
Mrs. Simmons was a member of Parkway Baptist Church in Greensboro, where she was a charter member. She enjoyed flower gardening at her home on Madison Avenue, quilting, bridge and cooking, especially seafood delicacies that her family and friends enjoyed at the Sandlewood at Long Beach, North Carolina. Mrs. Simmons’ greatest joy was being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived by her two daughters, Judy Edwards and husband Howard of Lenoir and Jean Campbell and husband Steve of Wilmington; three granddaughters, Andrea Edwards Hewitt and husband John of Greensboro, Erin Campbell of Baton Rouge, LA, and Katherine (Katie) Campbell of Fredricksburg, VA; three great-grandchildren, David and Kate Hewitt and Reed Poorbaugh; brother, James (Sug) Clarence Hamlin of Radford, Virginia, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 53 years, and seven siblings, Orville, Dwight, Warren, Calvin, and Paul Hamlin, Rosa H. Gantt and Pauline H. Kiessler.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 West Gate City Blvd. on Tuesday April 10, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Kevin VaLeu officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in Dot’s memory to Hospice of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405 or to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Dr. Wilmington, NC 28401.
