
A graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, August 21, 2016.
Frank was born November 23, 1926. A life-long resident of Greensboro, he served his community well and was active in many local organizations. From 1955 until his retirement in 1991, he was employed by Pilot Life Insurance Company as Medical Director, Senior Vice President and Member of the Board of Directors. Among his many accomplishments, he was a Past President of the NC United Way, the Greensboro Heart Association, the Guilford County Medical Association, the Gate City Kiwanis Club and the Guilford County Comprehensive Health and Planning Council. He was a founder of the Wellness Council of Greensboro, and a past Commissioner of the Greensboro Zoning Commission. He was founding member and past Senior Warden of All Saints’ Episcopal Church and in more recent years was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro.
Frank was a graduate of UNC-CH and Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He completed his internship and residency at NC Baptist Hospital of Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston Salem. He served his country as Captain in the US Army Medical Corp, 82nd Airborne Division.
A true renaissance man, he was an accomplished musician, scholar, speaker, architect, gardener, seamster, cook, handyman and master woodworker. He loved to travel; he loved to be the host; he loved dogs; and he loved to laugh. Most of all, he loved his family. Frank was a devoted son, a loving husband, and an extraordinary father, grandfather and friend. He was a true gentleman, kind considerate, and generous to a fault. He lived his life with integrity.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ellen Ross Izlar; three daughters, Virginia Bissell of Greensboro, Elizabeth Patterson and husband Joseph of Ellisville, MS, Frances Jamison and husband Robert of Southern Pines, NC; four grandchildren, Dennis R. Bissell and wife Izabela, Frankie Bissell, David Patterson and Benjamin Patterson and two great grandchildren, Sara and Denny Bissell.
