Edna was born in London, England on April 5th, 1915 to William and Lucy Ward. She lived in the London area with her three brothers and sister – all surviving the London Blitz of WW2.
She was a great academic and sportswoman. When she was 11 years old she was the only one of her year to pass the 11+ exam. This was such a great achievement that the entire school was awarded the day off in celebration. She was games captain of her school despite her diminutive 5’ height and continued to enjoy sport throughout her life.
Edna was very involved in St. Paul’s Church, Essex, England where she sang in the choir and was at the forefront of many of the Church’s women’s groups. Gardening was also a passion which brought her great pleasure. Edna remained active and healthy throughout her life despite her preferred diet of fried food, desserts and sherry!
Edna has been an inspiration to many. She always cared for others above her own needs. Words cannot do justice to the kindness and positive impact Edna had to all that crossed her path.
In 2005 Edna moved to Greensboro to be close to her daughter and grandchildren, a brave move for her at 90 years old.
Edna was preceded in death by her husband Harry Kemsley who was truly the love of her life. Edna will be so very missed by her daughter Jill and son-in-law Terry Slatter, brother Ken Ward and his wife Meg, grandchildren Stuart Taylor and Kay Thornton and husband Mick, great-grandchildren Charlotte, Harry and Danny Hardy and Kemsley Nicka Thornton, due in November.
Jill and Terry will be hosting a celebration of Edna’s life at their home 5714 Hidden Orchard Drive, Greensboro, 27410 from 2-4pm on Sunday, September 2nd.
Hanes Lineberry is assisting the family with the cremation arrangements after which Edna will be flown to England to be with her beloved Harry in St. Paul’s Churchyard.
