Born on December 12, 1955 in New York City, New York, Ed spent his life with a singular, quiet goal: to leave the world a better place than he found it. He was a man who believed in action over words, often lending a hand to neighbors, strangers and friends alike, without ever asking for recognition.
After a long, successful career with Toyota in sales/management, Ed found his true calling in retirement volunteering at a homeless shelter, assisting the parking ministry at his church, or delivering church flowers to those in need. Every week, he mailed postcards to let others know someone cared, especially if they were residents in assisted living or nursing home facilities. Ed had an innate ability to see a need and fill it, proving that the smallest acts of kindness can make the biggest impact. He kept his sense of humor while helping make the world a better place – he met his goal.
Ed is survived by his beloved wife of 31 years, Susan Hankins Giraldo; his step-children, Megan Gabalda and Natalie Key of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Brandon Key of Denver, Colorado; 3 grandchildren, Mason Key, Haley Gabalda, Emery Gabalda; his sister, Viola (Ron) Mueller of Neenah, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his mother, Phyllis Arndt Giraldo and his father, Fabio Giraldo.
In accordance with Ed’s wishes, there is no memorial service planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the memorial fund, “Hot Dish and Hope,” at First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro (617 N. Elm Street, Greensboro, North Carolina, 27401) or online at fpcgreensboro.org. This fund is used to feed hungry children and/or families a hot meal two times each week.
