Elizabeth N. (Langley) Heffernan, 98, received her angel wings on January 2nd, 2023. Her life will be celebrated at 12 pm, Friday, January 13, 2023 at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 11 AM.
Born in Greensboro, North Carolina she was the only child of Bessie and T. E. Langley. A few years after Bessie's death, her father married Esther Wakefield, who became her second mother. While growing up she attended Glenwood Methodist Church. She graduated in 1940 from Greensboro High, Greensboro College in 1944 and then from Oberlin College. Her first teaching job was in Virginia, where she met a civil engineer, Jim Heffernan, who she married in 1948.
His job resulted in their living in several states until they settled in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1956. In Lynn she was very involved at Lake Shore Park Methodist Church where she was the organist. She owned and operated Little Miss Muffet Nursery and Kindergarten, located in Wyoma Square, and was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club. In 1980, she and Jim retired and moved back to Greensboro to escape the New England winters.
After Jim passed, she volunteered at Hospice for more than 25 years. Libby was an avid quilter, painter, musician; she loved her family, crafting, cooking, baking, and she hosted a quilting club in her home. Libby lived a long, happy, fulfilling life.
She was predeceased by her husband James A. Heffernan, and their son James Michael.
She is survived by daughter Patricia and her husband Harry of Swansea, MA., her daughter Beth and son-in-law Bob, of Lexington, NC., 8 grandchildren, who called her 'Mammam' : James, Andrew, Kathleen, Michael, Erin, Daniel, Brittany and Heather and 11 great-grandchildren. A new great-granddaughter is expected in June.
