Eugene "Gene" Gottschalk

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, August 6, 2015 at Glenwood United Methodist Church, with Rev. Sarah Smith Pitts and Rev. Chris Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service in church sanctuary from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm.

Gene was born November 1, 1922 in Putnam, NC to the late William and Lydia Gottschalk and was a long-time member of Glenwood United Methodist Church. He retired from ITT Grinnell where he supervised nuclear pipe fabrication. Prior to ITT, he worked for W. H. Sullivan Company for many years. Gene served as Staff Sergeant in the United States Army, 28th Infantry Division during World War II in Northern France and Central Europe. He was an avid athlete, having played professional baseball as Pitcher for the Greensboro Patriots. Gene was charter member of Forest Oaks Country Club where he enjoyed decades of playing competitive golf with members as well as guests. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife and friends throughout the southeast to play various golf courses and have fellowship together. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Margaret Foster Gottschalk; his brother, Garland Gottschalk; and his sister, Vera Gottschalk Gambrell.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Donna Ford and her husband Dennis of Greensboro; sisters-in-law; brother-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.
