In 1946 she married Howard R. Bundy and worked while he made his way through an engineering degree at the University of Missouri in Columbia. They moved to NC for his job at Western Electric in Burlington, where they began raising their 2 children. Fern and Howard were very involved in the Assembly of God Church in Burlington, where she taught Sunday School, led the choir and played the organ. Howard’s work took the family to St. Louis where she continued singing with the choir and other ministries.
Fern had a huge heart for people and the family “adopted” numerous individuals that needed a place to stay and a family environment. In their 70’s, they cared for 2 Albanian refugees in their home Monday-Friday so they could attend safer schools and have close supervision and tutoring.
Fern loved to travel and went on several Holy Land tours. She was interested in Biblical Archaeology and was a keen studier of scripture and biblical times history. She put enormous amounts of energy and time researching their family genealogy. She loved to garden and to preserve what she grew. She loved animals and was especially fond of birds.
Fern is preceded in death by her husband, Howard Bundy and her 4 sisters and 3 brothers, whom she loved dearly. She is survived by her children: John Howard Bundy (wife Debra Bundy), Fara Bundy Brogden (husband Neil Brogden); grandsons, Paul Howard Bundy and Daniel August Bundy; as well as numerous precious nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hannah’s Haven Teen Challenge Center for women, 5432 Yanceyville Rd., Browns Summit, NC 27214.
