Flo embraced life, loved her family fiercely, and was actively involved in her community. She was a consummate manager and planner, from organizing a garden to hosting family and friends for a delicious meal.
She kept her big, diverse and far-flung family together gathering them every summer at the beach for more than 70 years and supporting them with unconditional love. She relished the noises, smells, creatures and shells of the salt marshes. She was generous and held to the tenet that a belief without an action is no belief. She had a fearless way of doing what is right for each person and was her family’s keeper of continuity and connections.
An early ecologist, Flo loved to read and research dolphins and shells. She taught her daughters to be open-minded, read books and pursue new adventures. A supporter of the arts including the Weatherspoon Art Gallery at UNC-G, she served as Special Awards Chair of the Art on Paper Exhibit at the Weatherspoon. Her friends turned to her for flower arrangements at weddings and special events. She served on the board of directors of the Greensboro YWCA, was co-editor with her husband of the Greensboro Daily News Book Page, and was a member of the Friday Afternoon Club.
Born in Florence, South Carolina, she was the daughter of Dr. Lewis Maxwell Lide and Margaret Elizabeth Turner Lide. She graduated from Westhampton College in Richmond Virginia in 1948. She was married to William D. Snider on June 12, 1948 in Florence, S.C. and the couple moved to Greensboro about a year later.
She is survived by four daughters, Jane Finalborgo, Mary Alice Lodico, Florence Kaplan, and Milly Rixey, 12 grandchildren and 20 great- grandchildren.
