

Doctor Frank Matt Houston passed away on December 13, 2025. He was born December 15, 1939, in New Orleans, the only child of Amanda Vallie Welch and Dr. Matt Francis Houston. Frank grew up in Houma, Louisiana.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Helen Butler Houston. He is survived by their three children, Frank Matt Murphey Houston (Tammi) of Hickory, NC, Catherine Elizabeth Cleere Houston Snarr (Stephen) of Newport Beach, CA and Amanda Johanna Butler Houston Goodwin (Robert) of Wilmington, NC; grandchildren, Murphey Houston (Kristin), Zachary Houston (Taylor), Courtney Houston Taylor (Eddie) and Josie Snarr; and great grandchildren, Walker and Emery Houston.
In 1957 he graduated as one of the Valedictorians from Terrebonne High School, Houma, LA. He attended LSU in Baton Rouge, LA, graduating in 1960 with a BS degree in zoology. He continued at LSU Medical School in New Orleans. While an undergraduate he was elected to Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi. He was president of his social fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha, was selected for “Who’s Who” and served as president of the Medical School senior class, graduating in 1964. He was the 5th generation physician in the Houston- Murphey family.
Dr. Houston did his internship at John’s Hopkins Hospital 1964-1965, following which he served 2 years, 1965-1767, as captain in the U.S. Medical Corps, stationed at Redstone Arsenal, AL. Upon discharge he received the Army Commendation Medal. In 1967 he returned to John’s Hopkins as a resident of Dermatology.
In 1970, he and his young family moved to Greensboro, NC to enter the practice of dermatology with Dr. Sherwood Barefoot and Dr. Hugh Fraser, now Greensboro Dermatology. He was in practice there for 44 years, retiring in 2014.
Since settling in Greensboro, he was active in many civic and cultural activities serving on various boards, including: American Red Cross, Green Hill Art Gallery, Greensboro Opera Company, Greensboro Symphony Society, Greensboro Historical Museum, Greensboro Preservation Society, Greensboro Day School, Friends Home Board of Visitors, Pennybyrn at Maryfield Ambassador’s Board, The Greensboro Branch ESU (English Speaking Union) and in The Headmaster’s Council at Greensboro Day School.
Dr. Houston was a member of the Summit Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow, a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, where he was twice a Senior Warden, and served 3 terms as Vestryman, and was a delegate to several Diocesan Conventions.
Dr. Houston was a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, The North Carolina Dermatology Society, The Dermatology Foundation, and the Scientific Advisory Committee of the American Skin Association.
He was a former member of the Greensboro City Club, Greensboro Country Club, Surf Club of Wrightsville Beach, and several Carnival organizations in New Orleans.
Dr. Houton’s interest and research in genealogy resulted in his membership in the Sons of the American Revolution, Society of the War of 1812 in North Carolina, and the Huguenot Society of South Carolina. He was the 6th Great Grandson of John Knox of Scotland, and a collateral descendent of General Sam Houston of Tennessee and Texas.
