Mr. Garland Holt Gordon, age 93, passed away peacefully on Thursday September 6, 2018. Born in Greensboro on March 5, 1925, he was the son of William H. and Bertha Burton Gordon. He was a graduate of Greensboro (Grimsley) Senior High School and immediately following graduation he enlisted during World War II serving in the 90th Division Artillery Headquarters Battery, participating in five major campaigns in Europe including Normandy and Ardennes (where he was awarded the Bronze Star). Immediately after the war, he went to work for Binswanger Glass Company and served in many capacities until his retirement after 44 years of service, with the distinction of being the top salesman in his region for 19 years.
On October 11, 1947, he married Dorothy “Dottie” McDowell, and was to soon celebrate 71 years of marriage. With his beloved wife, they enjoyed family, friends, bridge, and ballroom dancing for many blessed years.
He was a life-long member of First Baptist Church, a member of the Caldwell Service Class, and a Lifetime member of the Greensboro Elks Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William H. Gordon, Jr. and sisters, Frances G. Allen and Doris G. Bass. Garland is survived by his wife, Dorothy “Dottie” M. Gordon; son, Stephen Holt Gordon (Pamela); daughter, Karen Lee Gordon (Roland); granddaughters, Holly G. Holton (Ryan) and Shelby Gordon, and great- grandchildren, Jonah, Rennen, Spencer, Westen, Hadley, and Whitaker Holt.
Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday at Guilford Memorial Park conducted by the Reverend Dr. Steve Sumerel. Military Honors will be provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel from 1:30 p.m. until service time.
The family would like to add special thanks to the staff of Spring Arbor Assisted Living and Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro for their care, kindness, and compassion during the period of his declining health.
