G. Gary Nixon passed away peacefully on July 28, 2022, with his family at his side. Gary was born in Akron, Ohio to Glen and Marie Nixon on January 28, 1942. Gary is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley, daughter Laura, brother Rick (Debbie) Nixon, brother-in-law Bill Korpp and many other extended family members. Gary was a proud graduate of the University of Akron with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering in 1965. He earned his master’s degree in Civil Engineering under a U.S. Public Health Services Traineeship from Cornell University in 1966. Gary served two years in the U.S. Army as a Post Sanitary Engineer at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Gary’s career spanned thirty-four years at Finkbeiner, Pettis & Strout, twenty-three years as a Partner in both the Toledo, OH and Greensboro, NC offices. He received the American Society of Civil Engineers Toledo Section Young Engineer of the year in 1977. He also received the Outstanding Engineering Alumnus Award from the University of Akron in 1994. He enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling. Gary was an avid tennis player, playing for the University of Akron and ranked in both Ohio and North Carolina USTA rankings. In his retired years Gary enjoyed golfing and rooting for all Cleveland sports teams. Gary was very active in the Greensboro community through various volunteer roles, including the Rotary Club of Toledo and Greensboro, the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra and the Bel Canto Company Board.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 5:00 pm at Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm Chapel, 515 N. Elm St., in Greensboro on Monday, August 1, 2022. Services will be private.
