George was born in Brooklyn, NY on December 12, 1937, to Johanna Brunken Burfeind and John Christian Burfeind. He graduated from Fort Hamilton High School and The College of the City of New York, with honors.
George loved baseball and was an avid Brooklyn Dodgers fan. A son of Brooklyn and a future salesman, as a teen George sweet-talked his dentist’s receptionist to alert him when neighborhood Brooklyn Dodgers players were getting dental work. George cherished the many signed baseball cards of his favorite stars, which his mother discarded while he was studying at college.
After graduation, he worked at Ohrbach’s Department Store and then started in sales at Silver Knit Industries in New York City. After many years at Silver Knit, George was ultimately made President of the company. He continued his career in the hosiery industry in North Carolina at Adams-Millis and with Sara Lee. He finished his career consulting for Crescent Hosiery of Niota, TN.
George met the love of his life, Elizabeth (née Salhaney) at a church social in 1953. They were married in 1961 and were an inseparable, loving couple. They would have celebrated 65 years of marriage this April. Their bond was one of rare devotion; steadfast, tender, and enduring through all seasons of life. Together, they built a partnership rooted in respect, laughter, and unwavering support, a love that not only defined their own lives but touched all who knew them. It was a true love story.
George is survived by his dear wife, Elizabeth; his beloved sister, Elisabeth; his children, Lisa Wangerin (Matt) of Summerfield and John (Cristine) of Raleigh; grandchildren, Erik (Courtney), Krysta (Alex), Evan and Ryan; and great-grandchildren Mason and Parker.
George led a full and active life, volunteering and was involved in many organizations. He had many cherished friends from his long years with the Jaycees. He loved to travel but was always happiest surrounded by his family. He had a wonderful sense of humor and laughed heartily. He enjoyed regaling anecdotes of tales gone by, and was often thought to exaggerate and embellish such stories.
George was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Pearl River, NY and Greensboro's First Lutheran Church. He served as a leader in many roles, including church council, Chaplin and outreach, teaching with the Cornerstone Sunday School Class, at Camp Agapé and various church committees.
The family would like to thank the dedicated staff of Well-Spring, especially the wonderful caregivers of Skilled Care and AuthoraCare Hospice.
His life will be celebrated at 3 pm, Saturday, April 11, 2026 at First Lutheran Church, 3600 W Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27410.
