

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2014, at 2 pm at Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel with Ava Brewer officiating. The family visitation will begin at 1:00 pm.
Mr. George Winston Smith was born in Durham, NC to the late Edward Demming Smith, Sr. and Anna E. Pickett Smith. He was a 1949 graduate of NC State with a degree in mechanical engineering. He worked for Lucent Technologies (formerly Western Electric and AT&T for 38 years) He served in WWII with the Army Air Corp in Guam.
He was married in Greensboro on June 17, 1950 to Ruth Latham Smith for 50 years. George was a member of Cathedral of His Glory where he served as Deacon and as facilitator for the Senior Group. He served as Sunday school teacher for middle school young men for about 14 years at First Baptist Church in Greensboro; and later served at Parkview Baptist Church after moving to Morehead City. He was a member of the Sons of Confederacy and the Civitan Club for many years. George’s life was a ministry of always helping others.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth Latham Smith and sister, Betsy Rutledge. He is survived by his son, Ronald Pickett Smith of Greensboro, NC; daughter, Martha Latham Smith Vaughan and fiancé, Nabil Massaad of Morehead City, NC; granddaughter, Latham Marie Robertson of Los Angeles, CA; grandsons, Benjamin Brewster Robertson and wife Brittany Parks Robertson of Nickelsville, VA and Christopher Gordon Vaughan of Morehead City, NC; great grandson, Parker Boone Robertson; great granddaughter due on April 2014; and brother, Edward Demming Smith of Cary, NC.
