Gillie Siler Baxter, 96, formerly of Greensboro, died peacefully November 16, 2018 at Brookridge Baptist Retirement Home in Winston-Salem. Her life will be celebrated at a graveside service at 2 PM, Tuesday, November 20 at Westminster Gardens in Greensboro.
She was born in Randolph County, one of ten children of Virgil V. and Estella Gray Siler. Gillie was a lifelong resident of Greensboro and a long- time member of Muirs Chapel United Methodist Church where she was active in her Sunday school class, served as pianist for the Men’s Bible Class and in many capacities for the United Methodist Women. Upon graduation from King’s Business College, her professional life was spent in the legal field, beginning with Army Headquarters during World War II and ending with law firms in Greensboro.
She was an accomplished golfer at Longview Golf Course and the Cardinal Country Club and traveled extensively throughout all 50 states and all Canadian Provinces. Her love of golf was second only to her love and devotion of her family.
Gillie married Donald McKay Baxter on September 15, 1945 and celebrated more than fifty years of marriage prior to his death on October 13, 1995. In addition to her parents and husband she is preceded in death by five sisters and four brothers.
She is survived by her daughters, Wanda Campbell and husband Dexter of Winston-Salem and Sandra Wagoner and husband Michael of Morehead City; grandchildren, Blake Campbell Ravin of Concord, Dexter M. Campbell III and wife Ann Brown of Winston-Salem; Jeffrey M. Wagoner of Lynchburg, VA, and Scott M. Wagoner and wife Ashleigh of Greenville; great grandchildren, Gates and Brady Ravin, Grace and Maggie Campbell and Avaleigh Wagoner; and numerous nieces and nephew and their familes.
