Mr. Phillips was born July 7, 1923 in Spartanburg, SC, to the late Guion L. Phillips, Sr., and Naomi T. Phillips. He served the United States as a B-24 Liberator bomber pilot over Europe in World War II. Following the war, he attended UNC-Chapel Hill and graduated with a B.S. in Commerce in 1949, just one year after marrying his loving wife of 62 years, Jeanne. Shortly thereafter, he began his 33-year career with Burlington Industries and retired in 1987. He counted hiking the entire Appalachian Trail, from Maine to Georgia, alongside his wife as one of his greatest adventures. Golf was his favorite hobby, and he remained a student of the game for many years. He is preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne S. Phillips, and his brothers, William P. Phillips and Ralph S. Phillips. He is survived by his three children, Robert G. Phillips (Terri) of Greenville, SC, Elizabeth P. Winstead (Bo) of Raleigh, NC, and Susan P. Townsend (Tom) of Halifax, VA, as well as his seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church or to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, 799 Washington Street, PO Box 807, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425.
