Harold Dean Matheson

Mr. Harold Dean Matheson, 77, died Saturday May 22, 2010 at Wesley Long Hospital Palliative Care. A Celebration of his Life will be held on Wednesday, 11:00 am at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.

Harold was born in Watauga County on April 5, 1933. He was the son of the late Gardner Dean and Ruth Holt Matheson. Harold graduated from Bethel High School in 1951 and attended Guilford College. He was a US Army veteran and retired from Sears and Roebuck and Co after 41 years of dedication. He was a member of Guilford Baptist Church.

He was devoted to his family, friends and community. He was an active member and served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Beuna Vista Lodge, a member of Greensboro Elks, former Greensboro Jaycee, and member of Club 75 Dance Club. He and his wife volunteered faithfully with Mobile Meals. He had many talents and interests including gardening, golfing, barbecuing, fund raising and visiting his childhood home place in Vilas, NC where no task for him was ever impossible.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Wilson Matheson, of 57 years and three children, Diane Hylton and husband Rick, Harold Dean Matheson, Jr. and wife Natalie, Beth Gilbert and partner Larry Shaver. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Kimberly Thacker and husband Auburn, Ben and Scottie Gilbert and two great grandchildren, Brittany and Koy Thacker. Also survived by his sister Evelyn Styan and husband George, sister-in-law Sharon Matheson and former son-in-law Lon Gilbert. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother Lynn Matheson.

The family will receive visitors from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel.
