Harriette Anthony Carlson, 84, of Greensboro passed away peacefully Saturday morning. Born in Shelby, NC she was the daughter of Oliver Stanhope Anthony and Harriette Holton Anthony. She graduated from Shelby High School, attended Salem College, and graduated from Women's College (now UNCG), where she developed many life-long friendships.
After a brief teaching career, she married Robert F. Carlson and they spent over 60 years together in Greensboro before he passed away last year. At various times she was active in the Junior League of Greensboro, the Garden Club, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church and loved spending time at a wide variety of church activities.
Harriette's life centered on her Faith, her Family, and her Church. She had an unshakeable belief that God has a plan for our lives and she faced both good times and bad certain that things would work out according to that plan. She was one of the rare “balcony people” in life who are always there cheering you on. She welcomed everyone she ever met with a warm smile, encouraging words, and was never too busy to listen. She had a knack for making people feel special and your day was always brighter after spending time with her. Her parting words were always “I'll be praying for you”.
She is survived by son Fred Carlson, daughter Betsy Carlson, three grandsons who she adored – Taylor Carlson, Robert (Bo) Carlson, and Hugh Carlson. Also surviving are sisters-in-law Ann C. Patterson of Greensboro and Nancy Anthony Morgan of Shelby and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro. The family will receive friends following the service in the Virginia Gilmer Room at the church. Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Service, where she was a long-time employee, has the honor of assisting the Carlson family with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church.
