

Mrs. Helene Loew Whitson, 96, the only child of Osmond and Edna Bennett Loew, wife to Ted R. Whitson Sr., and wonderful mother to four children who adored her died August 17, 2016. She was born in New York City, lived for some time in California then moved back to New York City where she met and married Ted. Together they raised a loving family and celebrated almost forty-five years of marriage.
A service to celebrate her life will be on August 20 at 3 PM at Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church with Reverend Jeff Johnsen officiating. Following the service the family will receive friends during a reception in the fellowship hall. A committal service will be announced at a later date.
Helene was an outgoing woman who made friends easily. She loved people and would be one of the first to greet a stranger. She was a member of several community groups as well as an active member of W. Market Street UMC for more than forty years and a recent member of Mt. Pisgah UMC. Her home life was active too. She loved to keep a beautiful yard, was a great cook and particularly enjoyed any activity that meant her family would get together. She and Ted were members of several different bridge clubs as they were both very skilled players.
She is survived by her children, Barbara (Bill) Crawford of Wilmington, Virginia Thompson of Ft. Mills, SC, Ted Whitson (Donna) of Summerfield and Nancy (Dick) Kennedy of Greensboro; seven grandchildren, Ricky and Kenny Williams, Kimberly Horton, Chip Thompson, Brent Whitson and Kenny and Tammy Steelman; sixteen great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Along with her parents and spouse she is preceded in death by her grandson, Danny Thompson.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in her memory to the Humane Society of the Piedmont, 4527 W Wendover Ave, Greensboro, NC 27409, Grey Hound Friends of NC, 2908 Oak Ridge Rd, Oak Ridge, NC 27310 or a charity of one’s choice.
