Herbert (Herb) Hoover Hillard, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle passed away on Tuesday, August 14th at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital after a brave battle with various pulmonary illnesses.
Herb was born and raised in Salisbury, NC. After his education, he proudly served his country in the US Navy for several years. Once discharged, he went to work in the food service industry and managed a grocery store in East Spencer, NC. After moving to Greensboro, NC in 1959, he worked for DeSoto, Inc/Sherwin Williams for 31 years and retired in 1990.
Herb was an avid golfer. He also loved the beach, Duke Blue Devils basketball and was a sharp card player. He had a great sense of humor and a quick wit. In addition, he had a soft heart and would do anything to help his family, friends and neighbors.
Herb is survived by his spouse of 62 years, Jean Allgood Hillard, children: Rene Mose and Tony Hillard (Sharon) and grand-daughter Jordan Hillard, as well as brothers: Mick Hillard (Connie) and Jim Hillard (Sue), sister: Linda Hillard Justice, and many nieces and nephews.
He was pre-deceased by his parents: Ray Talmadge Hillard and Pauline Cartner Hillard, brother: W. T. (Bone) Hillard and sisters: Dollie Hillard Evans, Lorraine Hillard Wyrick and Doris Hillard Heath.
The family asks that Herbs’ friends remember him and honor him in their own way as he did not want a public memorial service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation or a charity of one’s choosing. Herb will be greatly missed by all who were privileged to know and love him.
