Howard was born November 28, 1941, in Winston-Salem to Howard Eugene Butner, Sr. and Edna Sharpe Butner. He obtained the rank of Eagle Scout at age 16. He was a Morehead Scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, served in the US Navy from 1964-1967, then received his MBA from Harvard. He had a career in the oil and gas industry and later worked for the Federal Government.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 48 years, Diana Wellons Butner, and his two daughters: Amy Butner Strange of Potomac Falls, VA, wife of Mike Strange and mother to Anderson and Michael; and Alice Ashley Butner Ward of Chicago, IL, wife of Jay Ward and mother to Mae and Spencer. Howard was the oldest of four siblings, Steve Butner (Kay), Susan Crotts (Bob), Mike Butner and Richard Butner.
He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and a loyal friend.
Services will be held at West Market Street United Methodist Church on Friday, December 14 at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave,27405.
