

Hoyt Winfield “Rooney” Boone Jr., born April 21, 1935, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2026, at the age of 90. His passing marks the close of a long and meaningful life devoted to family, service, and community.
Born to Hoyt Winfield Boone and Cam Boren Boone, Rooney was raised in Greensboro and graduated from Greensboro Senior High School in 1953. He proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was a devoted brother to Mary Anne Boone Thomas and remained deeply connected to his family throughout his life.
Rooney was a man known for his integrity, honesty, and strong moral character. He lived by values that guided not only his own life but also the lives of those around him. His dedication to his family and community left a lasting impression, one built not on recognition, but on quiet consistency, kindness, and responsibility. While his absence leaves a profound void, his example endures, offering guidance and strength to those who follow.
He is now reunited with his beloved wife and lifelong love, Frances Boone. Their bond remains a source of comfort and hope to all who knew them.
He is survived by his son, Jay Boone, and wife Eileen M. Boone; his daughter, Mary Boone, and spouse Jean Boone; and his grandchildren, Morgan L. Boone, Rebecca F. Boone, Natasha A. Bagwell, Frances Boone, and Declan Boone. His family carries forward his legacy with gratitude and love.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Abbotswood at Irving Park for their compassionate care during his final months, and to the funeral director for their thoughtful guidance and support.
Rooney Boone will be remembered with respect, gratitude, and quiet pride. May his memory be a blessing, and may he rest in peace.
A graveside committal will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery, located at 3901 Forest Lawn Dr, Greensboro, NC, 27455, on February 20, 2026, starting at 1:00 pm.
A memorial service will follow at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, situated at 607 N Greene St, Greensboro, NC, 27401, on the same day at 2:00 pm, with a reception to follow in the Haywood Duke Room.
