

GREENSBORO - Hoyt Bruce "Bud" Whitcomb died peacefully at Wesley Long Hospital on Sunday, November 27, 2011. A celebration of Bud's life will be held at 11 am on Thursday, December 1, at Westminster Presbyterian Church on West Friendly Avenue. A graveside service will follow at Green Hill Cemetery.
Born in Greensboro on September 24, 1927, he was the son of the late Hoyt Bruce and Mary Moseley Whitcomb. He attended Greensboro Senior High School and Guilford College. Bud served in the US Navy during WWII.
He was a former partner at Electric Supply & Equipment Company. Bud also served as a member of the Board of Directors at Fellowship Hall and the Greensboro ABC Board. He was an officer and member of the Greensboro Jaycees and had a special love for his involvement in the Greater Greensboro Open. A former member of Starmount Forest Country Club, he was an avid golfer.
Bud was a devoted friend of Bill W and was a counselor, friend and mentor to many people. He leaves a legacy of compassion, wisdom, and generosity.
He is survived by his bride of 62 years, Mary Vance McAdams Whitcomb of the home; daughters Kathy Thompson of Summerfield, Mary Ogino and husband Guy of Charlotte, and Christy Summey of Greensboro; brother Chuck Whitcomb and wife Marilyn of Burlington; "Papa Bud" is also survived by grandchildren Dr. Kate Lanier and husband Greg of Charlotte, Walker Thompson of Bloomington, IN, Jessica Ringer and husband Paul of Hampstead, Charlie Ogino of Charlotte, and Laura Summey of Greensboro; two great granddaughters, Caroline and Amelia Lanier of Charlotte.
Bud was also predeceased in death by sister, Jean Warfield, and brother, Paul Whitcomb.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8pm on Wednesday November 30, at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home, N. Elm Street, Greensboro.
