He was born at his grandparents’ house at 709 North Greene Street in Greensboro, NC on December 31, 1925 to the late J. Raymond Boyst and Rebecca Ogilvie Fortson Boyst. He enlisted in the US Navy on December 28, 1943 and was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida during WWII. He was initially one of the “fly boys” on board the B-24s (PBYs) that patrolled the US southern Atlantic coast, and was later in charge of guarding German prisoners of war who were transported to the US. After his discharge on June 4, 1946, he worked as a machinist at Wysong-Miles in Greensboro and later continued that trade in various departments at P. Lorillard Tobacco Company until his retirement in 1990 after 35 years of service. He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Jamestown, where he was a deacon and served on various church committees until his health prevented him from doing so.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death in 2014 by his wife of 67 years, Eloise Winslow Boyst, a daughter, Susan Jane in 1971, and his brother, Charles F. Boyst in 2013.
He is survived by his daughters, Becky Boyst of Garland, Texas, Sara Boyst of Greensboro and Pat Boyst of Asheboro, sons John (Janet) Boyst of Winston-Salem and Benjamin (Pam) Boyst of Dunellon, Florida, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A family graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 13, 2018 at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Greensboro.
