James “Jim” M. Farlow, 86, passed away peacefully at home, in his sleep on Wednesday, October 26, 2011. He loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and was met in heaven by his wife, Mary, to whom he has always adored.
Jim was a true character and a real “Go-getter.” He was a mail carrier in Greensboro for 57 years. He had a goal to have a rental house for every year he was at the Post Office; he had 60, mostly in the Glenwood area. But he was well known for his antique car collection. He was the man on Guilford College Road at Wendover that would never sell a car. His collection was completed in the 90”s, he had from 1903 to 1967 every model of Ford ever made.
But Jim was most famous for his generosity, for being a friend, for helping people in need. His heart would melt when a family would pull up to one of his rentals, with no money, homeless… Jim would let them have the house, give them money, and show them hope. You could always count on Jim Farlow; he was everyone’s guardian angel.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances Farlow; his infant son, John Farlow; his parents, Cecil and May Farlow; sister, Virginia Dare Carrier. He is survived by his brother, Quentin Farlow; his daughter and caregiver, Della Farlow Gray; his sons; Arnold and Ronald Farlow; grandchildren, Courtney and Brandy Gray, Nathan, Catherine, Daniel and Elizabeth Joy Farlow and Ronald’s newborn baby girl.
Services will be private and a postal memorial service will be held in the near future. His daughter, Della, would like to thank Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, for nearly four years he kept hanging on and for them not ever giving up on their “Jimmy”. FroRonda, Holly, Erica, and Dr. Rita Layson, thank you! Jim was full of life and had such a strong spirit, he will be greatly missed!
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in honor of Jim Farlow to “Loving Jim and Mary”, PO Box 817, Summerfield, NC 27358. This charity was started in December 2007, by the urgent need to help the homebound elderly that are hungry, poor, and sick in the rural areas of Guilford and Rockingham Counties.
