Alex was born in Columbia, SC, the son of the late William Rufus Galloway and Anna Dora Campbell Galloway. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Virginia (Ginger) Bass Galloway; his brother, William Rufus (Bill) Galloway, Jr.; and his son-in-law, Edgar (Ed) Francis Currie, Jr.
Alex graduated from Winyah High School in Georgetown, SC in 1954 where he was the quarterback of his football team and an academic scholar. He was in ROTC and went on to study electrical engineering at Clemson University. He graduated from Clemson in 1958 with high honors from the school of electrical engineering. He was hired by Western Electric Corporation upon graduation, just prior to meeting the love of his life, Ginger. The two of them met at a house party at Pawley’s Island “one enchanted evening” as he would always say, just one week prior to him moving to Greensboro, NC. This coincidentally was where Ginger was from. His family all knows it was no coincidence, it was a God wink. Soon after moving to Greensboro, he was called to serve his military duties in the United States Air Force. Alex and Ginger were married on April 4, 1959. Alex proudly served in the Air Force for four years at the bases in Florida and Bermuda. After his four years, he returned to Western Electric and was with the company through all of its changes until his retirement when it was Lucent Technology.
Alex leaves behind his two daughters, Virginia Vanstory (Van) Galloway Lesnett (Dirk) of Glenshaw Pennsylvania and Anna Galloway Currie of Jamestown. His beloved grandchildren, Matthew McCoy Lesnett, Alexis Vaden Lee Currie (fiancé, Amren Brenn Strigo), Andrew Vanstory Lesnett, Virginia Lee Lesnett, and Peter Roger Lesnett. He also leaves behind countless nieces, cousins and other family members. All of which he loved fiercely and was so proud of. each and every one of them meaning something very special to him.
Alex was a master at many things. He was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, Greensboro where he served multiple times as an Elder. He taught Sunday School, Bible studies and was a leader of its Veteran’s group. He and Ginger were youth group leaders for many years. He influenced many with his knowledge. Many have commented that he was a great encourager, listener and advisor. His family always said he was the “smartest man they ever knew”. He was an avid reader, gardener, craftsman, fisherman and sailor. In his much later years, he discovered his love of painting. His family and friends were in awe of his talent. Alex loved the low country where his roots were formed. After retirement, he and Ginger purchased a home in Litchfield Beach which they enjoyed with family and friends for 20 years. The salt air and beautiful sunsets at the “beach house” always made him happy. Alex had many passions in life, the first of which was his family. To live in the hearts of others is to never die.
Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel Greensboro, NC has the honor of assisting the Galloway family.
